It is surprising that so far we have 11 answers here, and not a single one about the “Gran Sasso raid”, a nazi operation to rescue Mussolini, who’d been captured and being held at a location in the Alps. Even more surprising since the previous most upvoted answer references a much less spectacular paratroop action.
The Mussolini rescue involved only few people (one of which the famous Otto Skorzeny) entering enemy airspace by gliders, which involved loop maneuvers “to gain altitude”. I am not expert on aeronautics and cannot explain why, only that they did it and and it definitely adds to the “badass score” of such operation.
Upon reaching the location, Campo Imperatore Hotel, a ski resort high in the Alps, these people proceeded to the building where Mussolini was imprisoned and captured the 200 soldiers guarding the place, rescued the target and left the location, without firing a single shot.
- Campo Imperatore Hotel
It was truly the closest example of a real-life operation to a James Bond movie.
